Vet Story: “Rub Your Hands Together and Feel the Warmth

By Staff Sgt Reginal Lyerly US Army Retired

When we think of the holidays, we think of warmth and togetherness. This is even more of a celebration as we reach a new normal in society. We may experience economic uncertainty on some fronts but we are anchored by our traditions. We can reflect on how restricted we were and the freedom we are seeing again.

This is the time that we remember family, celebrate family, cherish old memories and make brand new ones. Many of us feast like never before and party like never before. Many of us will enjoy those sporting events from all of our favorite professional teams.

As breathe new life into this holiday season, gratitude and attitude should reach an all-time high. Many will be going to their favorite stores and making the most of every sale. There will be many gatherings in businesses, schools and many places of worship.

This is season that multiple faiths observe their days of high significance and times of reflection. We hope to reflect on the upcoming New Year and what it can bring. The potential for people to be everything that they were meant to be.

We rub our hands together and feel the warmth. The warmth of reuniting in the present, embracing the past and share optimism for the future. Can we make the future what we want it to be? We feel the warmth, we feel the love and we feel the promise of new opportunities and beginnings.

On July 2 nd 1776, this congress voted in favor of independence and the Declaration of Independence was drafted on July 4 th 1776 by Thomas Jefferson (3 rd U.S. President). July 4th is recognized as the official Independence Day for the United States of America. This commemorates the official announcement of the colonies’ separation from Great Britain. Massachusetts was the first state to make July 4 th an official state holiday. The tradition of fireworks on this day dates back to 1777 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during its first organized celebration. The ship’s cannon fired a 13- gun salute in honor of the 13 colonies. This celebration of patriotism became more well- known and widespread after the War of 1812. By the year 1870, The United States Congress made July 4 th a federal holiday and has been a p
