Tribute to Women’s History
March is Women’s History Month. There is not enough space on the page to list of all of the accomplishments, achievements and firsts by women everywhere. We can attempt to highlight some of our very best and brightest in this article. These great individuals were responsible for many “firsts” and paved the way for so many people who enjoy the best opportunities today. Here are some great examples of excellence:
Ø Dr. Antonia Novello- the first female
to serve as United States Surgeon General
Ø Ann Smith Franklin- the first female
newspaper editor in America
Ø Madam C.J. Walker, the first female
self-made millionaire in America
Ø Sandra Douglass Morgan- the
African-American female president of a National Football League franchise
Ø Winifred Edgerton Merril, the first
American woman to earn a doctorate in mathematics
Ø Condoleezza Rice, the first African
American female United States Secretary of State
Ø Hillary Clinton, the first United
States First Lady to be elected to public office as a United States Senator
Ø Nancy Pelosi, the first female
Speaker of the United States House of Representatives
Ø Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman
to be appointed and serve as an Associate Justice on the United States Supreme
Court
Ø Francis Perkins, the first female
member of a presidential cabinet
Ø Edith Wilson, the first female
“Secret President”- the wife of US President Woodrow Wilson and US First Lady.
She was the first woman who was known for having made executive decisions on
behalf of the country. This dates back to 1919 when President Wilson suffered a
stroke and throughout the duration of his presidential term.
Women have a lasting legacy of being
standard bearers and trendsetters throughout world history, American history
and American society. We owe all women in this world and women in our lives a
true debt of gratitude. Former First Lady Michelle Obama said it best: “Don’t
be afraid. Be focused. Be determined. Be hopeful. Be empowered.”
