“Remembering Memorial Day”
Contributor: Staff Sgt Reginal G. Lyerly Ret US Armed Forces
Memorial Day is a holiday observed on the final Monday in May. The
purpose of this holiday is honor the men and women who died while serving in
the United States Military.
This observance was initially known as Decoration Day. The origin dates
back to the Civil War. During this time, many Americans visit state/national
cemeteries and memorials. One of the most common practices is to place flowers
on the grave as place a small American Flag. Some people hold family gatherings
in order to honor the sacrifices of the fallen. This is usually considered the
unofficial start of summer within the United States.
Memorial Day has evolved to commemorating all American military
personnel who died in all our nation’s wars. In 1968, the United States Congress
passed the Uniform Monday Act. This legislation officially declared Memorial Day
an observed Federal Holiday. The final Monday in May is an official Federal
Holiday for all Federal Employees.
Many confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day. Both holidays honor and
celebrate the members of the United States Military; however, there are key
differences. Veterans Day honors those who have served and who remain with us
to share their experiences of life in a military uniform. Memorial Day is designed
to honor for those who lost their life while serving in the United States Military. It
is appropriate to greet a living military veteran on Veteran’s Day with “Happy
Veteran’s Day”; however, it would not appropriate to greet a living military
veteran with “Happy Memorial Day”.
Let’s remember this time to honor and celebrate a rich history of freedom.
The sacrifices that our men and women gave were not in vain. We must
remember this on Memorial Day and every day.
