USA-UK The Special Relationship

Article Contributor: Staff Sgt Reginal Lyerly US Armed Forces Retired

There will always be a special relationship between the United States of America (USA) and the United Kingdom (UK). At the end of the American Revolution, the United Kingdom recognized American Independence in 1783.  Diplomatic relations were officially established in 1785.

The two nations share many common ties and ideals. Both nations believe in an open government, free speech and even open markets. The historical, cultural and language ties are closely reinforced.  Both countries share similar global security and national security interests.

When it comes to security and defense, The United States and the United Kingdom do more collaboration than any two nations throughout the globe.  Their militaries are often equipped, trained, and stationed together. There are at least 10,000 United States military personnel stationed in the UK at any given time. There are several hundreds of UK military personnel stationed in the US in over 30 US States. These nations are also the largest donors of humanitarian aid of any nation throughout the entire world. These two nations have contributed the most humanitarian aid to Iraq and Syria.

These nations have huge economic and trade ties to each other. Each nation has at least $1T invested in each other’s economies. This trade relationship is worth over 160 Billion Pound Sterling ($199 Billion US Dollars). The US and UK share a long history of shared education, knowledge and partners in science.

These nations have cuisines are unique to each nation and share similar foods within each other’s cuisines. Just like any other European nation, the UK food supply (especially processed foods) has more stringent standards than the US food supply. Foods originating from the United Kingdom will usually have fewer food additives than the same product originating from the United States. European nations usually take a precautionary approach by banning or warning its citizens about the hazards in a product. The United States does not remove certain additives from its food supply until it has been proven as dangerous to its citizens.

The United Kingdom and The United States will continue to have a strategic partnership and special relationship for many years to come. Their interests are interwoven in a manner that ensures each other’s success on the global stage.

VET STORY “We Declared Freedom” By Reginal G. Lyerly Before there was ever a United States of America, there were 13 colonies. Their legislative body was the Continental Congress. On July 2 nd 1776, this congress voted in favor of independence and the Declaration of Independence was drafted on July 4 th 1776 by Thomas Jefferson (3 rd U.S. President). Massachusetts was the first state to make July 4 th an official state holiday. The tradition of fireworks on this day dates back to 1777 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during its first organized celebration. The ship’s cannon fired a 13- gun salute in honor of the 13 colonies.
