VET STORY: “Never Be Too Cool for School” by Staff Sgt Reginal Lyerly US Armed Forces Retired

August is traditionally Back to School Month. For most school systems across the state of North Carolina is on or around August 26, 2023.

Of course, each county school system has their own calendar. Here are some good ways to mentally prepare for the new academic year:

 Create a Positive Mindset
 Get Organized for back to school
 Create a good study schedule
 Make sure any summer homework is done
 Make you have all of your supplies. This will help alleviate some unnecessarily stress before the start of the academic year. Being prepared for the new academic year can help save time.

Here are some other things to consider:
 Start waking your child early about a week before the start of the school year. This help gets the child used to waking up early again.
 Implement an hour of quiet time at night. This will help a child to get settled down before rest.
 Limit how much that you allow your teen to go out at night during the week. Of course, this is ideal but this will make time for homework and more important tasks.
 Considering how to reward your child for the things they do well. We as humans operate on a system of reward. All of us have a reward center, it is psychological. These are simple tips to help prepare for the next academic year. No two situations are the same. In real time, we have to do what works for children. This will vary from household to household. The message is to prepare and to “Never Be Too Cool for School”.

On July 2 nd 1776, this congress voted in favor of independence and the Declaration of Independence was drafted on July 4 th 1776 by Thomas Jefferson (3 rd U.S. President). July 4th is recognized as the official Independence Day for the United States of America. This commemorates the official announcement of the colonies’ separation from Great Britain. Massachusetts was the first state to make July 4 th an official state holiday. The tradition of fireworks on this day dates back to 1777 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during its first organized celebration. The ship’s cannon fired a 13- gun salute in honor of the 13 colonies. This celebration of patriotism became more well- known and widespread after the War of 1812. By the year 1870, The United States Congress made July 4 th a federal holiday and has been a p
